Lego Furniture

What is it about Scandinavia and reducing things to small parts? Perhaps things that you don’t really need, but are natty anyway? And perhaps - that you end up pulling apart with your teeth?

Somehow the Scandinavian link here helps makes sense of this great hybrid via Urban Retro Lifestyle - of Eric Harshbarger’s take on Ikea assemble it yourself ethos: a 120 pound desk made of Lego. Sure, you’d have to buy 35,000 bricks if you want to make this baby for yourself. But if you don’t have plans for the next five weekends you now have something to keep the kids endlessly occupied.

He also put together this life-sized grandfather clock. Some of the mechanical pieces are from a real clock (This is because Lego bricks - even the toy from the future Lego Teknik has its limitations… real lego pieces, made from plastic, would wear out much too quick).

The whole clock is full size, runs perfectly, and the detail on the clock face is all made from real Lego (individually riveted in to provide the right amount of resolution to be able to read the time.

I wonder if he does a small alarm clock for my bedside table. You can check out more on Fascinating Lego Model of the Day (Warning - inner geek alert!).

And how is this! From uber-beautiful design firm Droog - you can buy their modernist classic (in more ways than one) lego chair - this one you can actually buy.

See MoCo Loco (Modern And Contemporary Design Blog) for more information. I couldn’t find it on their website, but I have it on semi-reliable information that they may be the designers of this uber-fab piece of cooler than cool design. Forgive me if I’m wrong - if anyone knows the source I’d be happy to supply the correct information.

And if it’s a sofa you’re after, we’ve spotted two models. One (via Apartment Therapy) is not for those Goldilocks that like their chairs too hard (it’s made of a very un-floppable carved wood).

The other - and our pick for a useable version - is the second one called Bekky, found courtesy of Pocket Lint.

Bekky is rubber foam version you can stack and restack to your heart’s content (just don’t forget to put them away before mom gets home). It’s yours for just $466 - check out No Made Design for more information.

Our thoughts? Courtesy of our childhood training, every kid born since 1970 has the training, and the start of a Lego brick collection. Now, architects - why stop at furniture? Why can’t we make our own full scale Lego block houses? Just produce a giant green sheet with enough dots on it, and we’re good to go. It’s only a matter of time..

For your own guide to making things for your desk, work, or around the house, you can’t go past Forbidden Lego - the cult smash hit book that came out not too long back and dubbed “The Anarchist Cookbook for the Nursery”. Added to somewhat useful things like pencil holders and computer cases are almost lethal things, like Lego guns, security devices, and other miscellaneous nefarious schemes. Forbidden Lego is great stuff.
